Day
12 - Diagnose Ignition
1/7/04
Well, following the procedure in the Hayne's Manual, I started to diagnose the ignition system. The first step was to see that current was reaching the transistorized coil ignition (TCI-H) unit in the firewall:
Connecting a voltmeter to terminals 4 and 2, I found no voltage. This means there is a problem with the supply wires. Following the wires from the unit, there are three that go the distributor, one to ground, and two to the coil. The coil is where the unit must get its power.
I've sent a post to the polo-l mailing list to try and get some help:
After more searching on my own, the black wire on terminal 15 that runs into the car (the wire that provides the coil with power) is not connected to anything inside the car (the pin it goes to on the multi-connector has nothing on the other side).
This wire needs to be connected to power when the ignition is in the on and start position. Following the wire from the ignition switch, I found it to go through the firewall at the fuse connector under the hood. This connection needs to be bridged in order to get power to the coil. That's where I'm at now. Any help appreciated!
