Day 13 - Victory! Well... Sort of.
1/16/04

First, I decided I should pump some of the fuel from under the hood because the lines were all gunked up with diesel.  I disconnected the lines from the pump, and fuel filter.  In the process, I snapped the connection on the fuel filter.  Connected a pump to the fuel line and pumped about 2 gallons of fuel until it looked clean.

Had to get a new filter.  Here's a pic of the previous one and the new one.  Note the previous one's color as it was dirty from whatever contaminants were in the old diesel fuel line.

Thanks to folks on www.porka.net, and the polo-l and polo-gt mailing lists for their assistance helping me with the coil wiring.  I was able to follow the wire that powers the coil into the car and found no wire going to that pin on the connector inside the car.  I custom fabricated a wire soldered to a nail of just the right size to go through the connector and allow me to connect it to the correct wire running from the ignition switch inside the car.

Instead of tapping the wire, I made a little three way connector to add the custom wire to the circuit and get power to the coil:

I then tested the ignition as described in the Hayne's manual and everything tested just right!

I rolled the car to the edge of the garage and got the fire extinguisher nearby just in case and cranked the key.  The engine sputtered and then fired right up!

Then it stalled right out.

If I pump the gas a few times and start the car, the engine will run and then stall.  The more pumps I give before ignition, the longer it will run.  The fewer, the shorter.  If I don't pump the gas at all before turning the key, the car won't fire at all.

The auto choke and cutoff solenoid both have power when the key is on.

I've just sent an email to the polo mailing lists and posted on Porka.net.  We'll see how long it takes to figure this out!
