The 1996 Golf Harlequin is one of the most limited production cars VW has ever produced.  This page is dedicated to the owners of these special cars, and to trying to pinpoint exactly how many of these cars were produced (presumed to be 264), and to share information about various Harlequins out there.

Submit your Harlequin Here!

If you own a harlequin, or know somebody who does, please email me, or submit it above, and I'll post the information about it on this page.

Here's what I've gathered on how many Harlequins were produced
I'm working on a Harlequin FAQ, so if you have a question you would like to see answered, please email me!

NEW! January, 2012: Found photos from the 1996 Chicago Auto Show on the official Chicago Auto Show website, in their history section.  I've been trying to find something like this for almost 15 years!  Check it out, from February, 1996:

(12/2012): Here are some factory workers posing in the Polo Harlequin Production line from late 1995 in Spain (found in a VW Factory Video):

118 Harlequins Accounted for! (1/18/2015)

Owner: José Rincón Ham, Toulca City, Mexico
Base color: Chagall Blue
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Steering Wheel Style: Older
Production Date: Unknown
VIN: 3VWFA81H8TM062013, likely the 1st Harlequin
Comments: Jose lives in Toluca City, Mexico, and purchased this Harlequin brand new from a VW Agency in Lerma, Mexico.  From everything I've gathered, this may have been one of the first four Harlequins ever produced, which was probably used to demonstrate the model to VW Executives, and left in Mexico.  It does not have the silver gauge faces as later Harlequins do.  Click the image at the left for more photos.

Comments: Emily purchased this Harlequin in 1998 with 16K Miles on it.  She submitted this Harlequin on 8/8/2006 and it has an earlier production VIN than any Harlequin previously submitted, and may be one of the first four ever produced.
Update 3/2013: This was a free car that I just got this week from a friend in San Francisco. It has a few dings, needs a CV joint, and needs a rear hatch latch replaced, but runs well. I plan to find parts to get it as straight as possible.

Base color: Pistachio Green
Transmission:  Automatic
Steering Wheel Style: Newer
Production Date:6/96
VIN: 3VWFA81H4TM113331, # 13 of 200 run
Comments: I've heard the rumor that many Harlequins sat around and were then painted a single color, or that some left the factory just one color and have finally found evidence that this is true.  I found this Harlequin while searching for 1996 Golfs on the internet (1/14/04).  The VIN fits in the Harlequin range, and Golfs were never available in the USA completely painted in Pistachio green.  Somebody probably repainted this harlequin completely in it's base color, or it was a car destined to be a harlequin that never had the panels swapped with other cars.  See also # 82 of 200 below.

Owner: Jacob Ganshirt, Fort Mitchell KY
Base color: Chagall Blue
Transmission: Automatic
Steering Wheel Style: Newer
Production Date: 6/96

She is an artist and teacher living in Los Angeles, CA.  UPDATE: 10/2006 The car is now owned by Jacob in KY.  "I started my search at the very beginning of 2006 for this car. I specifically wanted a chagall blue based car. I searched high and low and started to give up on the search until I ran across this car in Arizona. After 3 weeks of talks with the previous owner and 11 months later she was on a trailer and headed my way where she currently resides. Much in store for this car."

Production Date: 5/96
VIN: 3VWFA81H5TM113337, # 19 of 200 run
Comments: "The harlequin was originally purchased from Jim Ellis VW in Atlanta by Bobby Chung. In I think 02 or 03, he sold it to a woman in Philadelphia (Anne, I forget her last name right off). I purchased it from her in mid 2010. Bobby bought his Harlequin from Jim Ellis VW as a demo.  Bobby also knows of a Harlequin that was purchased and painted over!  What a shame.

Base color: Tornado Red
Transmission: Automatic
Steering Wheel Style: Newer
Production Date: 6/96
VIN: 3VWFA81H5TM113340, # 22 of 200 run
Comments: This Harlequin was owned since new by Lakes Region VW Audi, a local VW dealer (This is the Harlequin that got me interested in Harlequins back when I was in high school!).  It was sold some time back to a very nice gentleman named Roger Bruns.  I'm sure Roger enjoys it, as I see it around town quite a bit!

Update:
Mike bought Harlequin #22 in 9/12 off of ebay. "It was listed from a dealership in NH and I had it transported to Roxboro, NC It had major rust issues so I am currently doing a full rotisserie restoration on it. Plans are to completely remove all rust and respray in a base/clear coat. I am also doing a fwd oem R32 swap. On the outside it will look stock but will have a fresh R32 motor under the hood. Here are a couple of pics. One is when I first got it and the other is of its current state." Click here for more pics of this amazing undertaking.

Comments: Danny found this car in Knoxville, TN in December 2009 on Craigslist.  It was purchased from a guy who bought it from the original owner just 2 weeks prior (becuase she was going to enter it in a demolition derby!) so Danny is basically the second owner.  He has quite a few plans for the car and looks forward to owning it for a long time to come.

Comments: This car was 1 of 3 owned by a graphics firm in San Jose, CA.  A fellow harlequin owner in CA gave me this info years ago to get the page started.  In June, 2012, this car was found on craigslist needing a transmission.  It had been completely repainted black, but the jambs and interior still show the Harlequin past. Click the image for more photos.

Base color: Chagall Blue
Transmission: Automatic
Steering Wheel Style: Newer
Production Date: 6/96
VIN: 3VWFA81H9TM113357, # 39 of 200 run
Comments: Submitted November 4, 2014. It's a solid car with 91,000 miles on it. Runs great. A little rust on the driver's rocker and rear quarter, otherwise the body is nice. Needs paint and a lot of TLC. It wasn't maintained physically for a long time. So far, I have installed a new windshield, new starter, and Mass Air Flow sensor. I just got a set of original alloy wheels and caps, so next stop is the tire store. Will be getting paint soon - a major undertaking! Thanks for keeping the roster of these unique cars!

Owner: Tarah Scherr, Dublin Georgia
Owner (1/13): Evan Maddox, Ocala, FL
Base color: Pistachio Green
Transmission: Manual
Steering Wheel Style: Newer
Production Date: 6/96
VIN: 3VWFA81H4TM113359 # 41 of 200 run
Comments: Modifications: GLX rear-disc/5-lug conversion, euro hatch, euro front/rear bumpers, euro VR6 chin spoiler, GTi headlights, Hella Blue tails, Mountney wheel/shift knob, Raceland coilovers, H&R spacers; Grille will be repainted Pistachio, as well as the hatch being repainted Ginster, to fix the inconsistency in VW's pattern (when compared to the blue and yellow base cars)

Bought the car from Tarah Scherr back in December 2012, after a 10-year clown hunt. Patience paid off, as I now have a virtually rust-free Harlequin in my favorite color scheme. It has it's issues, but they will be worked out here shortly, as well as the car receiving a fresh respray. Once that's done, it'll be on the road and taken everywhere I go. With 195k on the clock, it still runs like a champ.

I am very attached to it as it was my first car and I originally wanted to save it for my car collection. The car has excellent interior (not even one hole!). Comments: Dec. 2013: "Bought from Joan Bellin, who previously registered the car before, its #137 of the 200 run. Since bought i repainted the bumper pistachio green again and had all rust fixed. Now a summer (only) daily driver and VW show car people love it. Best car i have ever owned, and will be mine forever. plan to own all 4 color bases someday. (pictures to come soon)"

Joan thought of the license plate ROYGBIV (the seven colors in the spectrum) and had to get the car to accompany it!  Check out her plate in the pic.  As an artist, the Mondrian or Bauhaus inspired upholstery appeals as much to her as the paint job! Update 8/2012: The title is now officially in my son's name. Someday a new owner may re-paint the front bumper pistachio green, but we like the design proportions better in yellow. The iconic Harlequin is featured in a must-see photo by Alexis Fam Photography.

Comments: "I have a list of mods for car, but first on the list is to have it repainted to correct the dealer's misdeeds.  I bought the car off Craigslist, I was looking forever for a one, but every one I found was too expensive or too far away. After seeing your website, I ran with the theory of the solid color car. I looked at every 1996 Golf I could find (40-50 cars). My persistence paid off. The woman I purchased it from bought the car red. I agree with number 13's owner, here is another example of a dealership trying to move another unit.

I just wanted to take the time to let you know that I am now the Proud owner of #157 Harlequin.  I purchased it from Lisa Weeks back in October of 2010 and drove it for a bit before parking it in the garage for most of the winter, I had come across it simply by chance when I was driving back from work late one night in niagara falls, i pulled over to check it out as I had never seen a Harlequin in person before, saw what good shape it was in and contacted Lisa the next day to start the process of buying it.  It was automatic when I bought it with 180,000km on the clock, unfortunately the transmission died on me back in April, so after weighing all my options I came across a friend of mine selling his Jetta 12V VR6 5 speed.  This started my mod craze with the car, the engine is from another friend's GTI Driver's Edition and has 180,000km on it as well (the harlequin at the time of the swap had 187,000km on it) and came also with Schrik Performance cams, Neuspeed Power Pullies and a cold air intake, the transmission has a B&M Short shifter on it as well as stage II cluctch and flywheel.  The car now sits with the VR6 in it, with 192,000km on the car, it also has a custom 2.5" Stainless steel exhaust, original german FK G1 coilovers installed, corrado G60 front brakes (i retained the drum rear brakes for the sake of keeping it somewhat original), corrado steel wheels (original silver painted finish), euro black textured fender flares and euro hella clear and red tail lights.  I also kept the car a 4 bolt to maintain much of the originality of the car and still has all the origianl equipment including the factory stereo.  I have many more plans for the car including a custom air ride setup, custom twin turbo setup and im trying to find a nice set of 15 - 16" BBS RS's for it.  For me this is my second VW, I have a 2007 Candy White GTI, its modifyed as well with B&G RSII coilovers, 17" BBS RS's measuring 17x 9.5" in front 17x11" wide in the rear, custom widened rear fenders, starge II Revo software, evolution motorsports cold air intake, GHL R32 3" full exhaust and OEM R32 rear end conversion.  For me "dubbing" is a way of life and as Im sure you understand, it's addictive haha.

Comments: I've been following your Harlequin site for years, always interested to see the increasing number of Harlequins registered...I've finally taken the time to throw mine into the mix.

Mine has quite a history to it that I didn't add into the comments section but would be glad to...this one was actually donated to Habitat for Humanity by Volkswagen Canada - it was a raffle prize to raise money for a Habitat build that was taking place in Newfoundland, Canada. It toured that province for a year, being shown in many different locations where people could buy tickets to win it, the proceeds of course going to Habitat for Humanity. My parents were both participating in the Habitat build and Dad had bought some tickets to support the cause. The draw was held on the last day of the build - August 22nd, 1997 - and Dad's ticket was drawn. They drove the car back to Ontario and gave us the biggest surprise! The car wasn't their style but it was mine so I offered to purchase it from them and they then could purchase something else that suited them better...all were very happy! I've kept all the history for the fundraiser from the Harlequin draw signs to the winning ticket. As you can tell by the very low mileage, it has only ever come out on the nicest of days...I typically run a whopping tank or two of 94 octane fuel through it every year just to keep it fresh. To document the mileage, I've taken it to the VW dealer each year since 1997 just to have the oil changed. It's totally stock from the tires up...likely the finest original example of one of VW's lowest production cars...neat to be able to say that! Anyway, thanks for the great site and all the passion and work you put into documenting the history of these great cars...I'm glad to have the opportunity to share ours on your site.

Patrick: "I was told this car was completely stock when I bought it, but I've never seen another Harlequin with a sunroof. Perhaps it was installed by the dealership? I haven't made any modifications to it myself. Comments: I purchased this car in October 2010 from the second owner. This is my second Mk.III and my eight VW. My previous VW was a 1979 Rabbit painted like a Harlequin. I've always wanted a real Harlequin and this car never fails to get smiles everywhere it goes."

Comments:  Aug purchased in completely stock condition about a year ago. Now has CELIS headlights with Euro lighting, keyless remote and factory iPod adapter with newer deck. Also has Corrado 15" steel wheels.  "This car originally arrived at Langley Volkswagen back in 1996 when I worked there, so I have known this car since it arrived at the dealership. I got to drive it a few times before it was dontated to the Lanlgey RCMP for their Community Policing program.  When the car was returned to Langley VW last year, I finally bought it from VW with only 31 000 KM on the clock, and it is in virtually NEW condition. This car gets alot of attention as it is only one of two known here in the Lower Mainland of BC (with *possibly* a rumoured third)... it's kind of a "love 'em or hate 'em car, and I love it!"  Click the picture for more!
